Accounts last a long time and are always active. I have successfully logged into 50,000 accounts from one IP address without any problems.
These accounts ONLY allow you to view mail and change passwords. They do not support sending emails or using other features.
Although they don't have IMAP support, they do have an API for reading messages. (Login and click "API" to get more information)
